Back in 2015, voters approved nearly a billion dollars to build bike lanes, repaved roads and whatnot. It was called “Move Seattle.” The bike lanes were budgeted to cost an astronomical $860,000 per mile, but now these tiny ribbons of asphalt are costing $12 to $13 million per mile.
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) blames the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for the overruns.
It’s not just bike trails that cost a bundle in Seattle. A park-and-ride garage budgeted for $32 million will now cost $65 million, or $100,000 a space. Outside estimates put the typical perspace cost of a Seattle parking garage at $25,000–$35,000.
The Center City Connector streetcar project, also managed by SDOT, was estimated to cost $108 million but will now cost $200 million. Christian Britschgi| reports, “SDOT officials knowingly lowballed some costs by as much as 50 percent. Construction has since been halted while an independent review of the project is performed.”
